Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is an ADHD Coach?

An ADHD Coach is someone who delivers life coaching through the lens of ADHD/Executive Function. The ADHD Coach uses her/his expertise and understanding of the unique ADHD brain and how it works to support the client as she develops new strength-based skills and strategies for managing the impact of ADHD and achieving her success.

2.How is ADHD coaching different from therapy for ADHD?

While therapists typically prompt a patient to reflect back her life to discover how events, relationships, situations, and emotions have brought her to and help explain where she is right now, coaches prompt clients to consider the future and work with the client to acknowledge where she is right now, what she wants her future to look like, and how she can make that happen.

In the therapist-patient relationship, the therapist  is the expert who provides explanations to the patient for the patient’s behavior and determines the focus of the sessions. In the coach-client relationship, the client determines the focus of the sessions and the coach and client bring their shared expertise to collaborate in designing the client’s path forward.

3. What can I expect to happen in a coaching session?

At the beginning of the session, the coach greets you and welcomes you in. The coach invites you to share what’s on your mind for the session and what you’d like to leave the session with when it’s over. Then the coach guides you through a deep dive into your focus topic using motivational questioning, active listening, mirroring, filtering, and reflection. The session is a collaborative venture between the client and the coach. All of this occurs through the ADHD/Executive Function lens, ensuring the development of strategies and skills that work for and with ADHD and the client’s unique experience of it in her life.

4. How long does a coaching session last?

Typically, sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes.

5. Where do you meet with clients?

Clients participate in coaching by either phone or by Zoom session. The client chooses what works best for her.

6. What training have you received in ADHD coaching?

I am an ICF accredited coach with ADHD specific coach training from ADD Coach Academy (ADDCA). Read my bio here.

7. Who do you coach?

I primarily work with adult women seeking to develop new skills and new strategies for managing their ADHD symptoms so they can excel in their careers and their personal lives. I do not coach labels, however. I coach people. No official diagnosis is required for us to work together.

8. Do I have to buy a whole “coaching program”?

There is no one-package-fits-all product to buy. We work together session-by-session at a pace that feels comfortable to you. While clients may purchase multiple sessions at a time and schedule multiple sessions at a time, they are not purchasing a coaching program.

9. Do you take my health insurance?

Currently, most health insurance companies do not pay for ADHD coaching. Alternatives to out-of-pocket payment for coaching do exist, however. Clients may pay for coaching using their HSA or FSA employer benefit. Clients may also request a prescription for ADHD coaching from their physician then deduct the coaching cost on their taxes. Some clients may also negotiate with their HR departments to have coaching expenses reimbursed if the coaching is directly related to work performance.
